Sketching in Photoshop again after a long while. She’s become a brunette now. Might change her back to ginger again, but I am liking the dark hair/light eyes combo for the moment.

A halfway-done watercolour on pencil in my previous sketchbook that I finished with Photoshop. Astra’s look is a balancing act between simplicity and iconic imagery; Too complex and it may take too long to focus on unnecessary detailing during the actual work later, while too simple could risk making her not instantly recognizable as a main character.
I like figuring out her look and clothing, especially her boots…I was thinking of whether it can be reconstructed IRL while designing them.

Supporting Character: Aquilo, 2011
Ooh, lookie, one of them high & mighty, stick-up-their-bum elves I was talking about! His name is Aquilo, and as his attire and the smouldering scoundrel-ish expression indicates, he’s a *drum roll* rogue~!
But what kind? Hmmmmmmmmm…

I am attached to the short-cropped hair I gave him, since elves I’ve seen/read about in genre fiction tend to have Pantene-quality longish tresses. He’s still pretty though, a trait that I can’t take away from these elves, even though their ‘tude actually annoys me while writing them ^o^

Character Design Evolution: Astra & Hakon, 2001-2011
Astra’s look wasn’t changed until 2010, in which she went through constant revisions before settling on her current image. Contemplating whether or not to change her hair to a darker shade of auburn.
Hakon was originally an elf in 2001 :D But in that form, his back-story was problematic; I kept stumbling while building his background until I changed him into a dwarf around late-2009. It pretty much clicked from then on; As a dwarf, Hakon embodies the ‘heroic journey’ more effectively, as I feel he starts with the ‘disadvantage’ of reader perception of what dwarves ‘should be’ rather than what he ‘can be’. I hope that, as a character, Hakon will emerge differently than what readers expect him to be in positive ways :)
There’ll still be elves in here; The arrogant, stick-up-their-bum, high & mighty ones, I might add (the best kind, ha!)
